A community event with people seated on red chairs under a canopy. A speaker addresses the crowd. Colorful balloons decorate the area.

On 26 July 2025, Neighbour Ring Community Services (NRCS) opened its doors in a special way—hosting our very first Open House at the familiar pavilion of Blk 15A Joo Seng Road. The event marked a significant milestone: 20 years of journeying with our community.

A Celebration by Joo Seng, for Joo Seng

The afternoon was filled with colour, laughter, and connection. The Open House was split into two segments: a lively carnival from 2:00 to 3:30 pm, followed by stage performances from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. At the heart of the celebration was an exhibition chronicling our beginnings, milestones, guiding principles, and the many programs that now shape the rhythm of life at NRCS.

What made the event truly special was the people behind it. Nearly all the game and craft booths were manned by our very own seniors and volunteers, highlighting the spirit of empowerment that drives our work. Guests got to try their hands at Nagomi art, beadwork, and old-school games, while enjoying free-flow ice cream, hotdog buns, and popcorn. The entire event was a vibrant showcase of the creativity and warmth that define the Joo Seng spirit.

We were also honoured to have Mr Alex Yeo, Member of Parliament and Advisor to Potong Pasir Grassroots Organisations, join us. The event was made possible in partnership with the Joo Seng Residents Network, our long-time community collaborator.

A Full House, and Full Hearts

Over 250 attendees came through, including many of our members who brought along their families and friends. Members of the public also joined out of curiosity and support—some even with their whole families in tow. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many describing the event as fun, heartfelt, and full of life.

Our programs were showcased not just in booths but also on stage—featuring performances from our singing interest group, line dancing crew, and Zumba Gold class. Through this, visitors got a taste of the regular activities that bring joy and meaning to our seniors week after week.

We also took this opportunity to introduce our newest initiative: the NRCS Community Counselling Service and our mental wellness framework, which integrates emotional support with community belonging.

A Moment to Remember

Among the many meaningful moments, one stood out. Uncle Steven, one of our volunteer photographers who is currently undergoing cancer treatment, still insisted on helping at the event. He told us, “Please don’t leave me out just because of my treatment. Even if it’s out of good intentions.” His presence reminded us all of the resilience and dignity within every person we serve.

Many seniors also shared how much it meant to be seen and celebrated. For some, it was their first time performing on stage. For others, it was simply the joy of being useful again.

Looking Ahead

This Open House was more than a celebration. It was a testament to the maturity of our community—from just running programs to building real relationships. As we reflect on 20 years of journeying with our neighbours, we’re filled with gratitude for every person who made this possible and hope for the road ahead.

If you’d like to support or partner with us in our work, we’d love to hear from you. Together, let’s continue to make Joo Seng a place where everyone belongs.
