Rain or shine, community thrives!

We were all looking forward to March 20.
The plan was simple but exciting — to take our seniors from NRCS on a morning walk at the newly opened Mandai Boardwalk, as part of our ongoing collaboration with Sheng Hong Active Ageing Centre (AAC). The sign-ups reflected the buzz — over 70 seniors registered, alongside 10 dedicated volunteers ready to accompany and care for them along the way.
But as the day approached, the weather had other plans.
The meteorological services issued a monsoon surge warning, stretching right across our event date. Safety always comes first, especially with our seniors in mind. And so, with heavy hearts but clear heads, we made the call — the walk would have to wait.
Yet what unfolded that morning was no less heartwarming.
Though some were understandably disappointed, our seniors showed up with their usual graciousness and good humour. Plans changed — but their desire for connection didn’t.
Instead of the boardwalk, our volunteers led them through light stretching exercises indoors, creating moments of laughter and movement. We played games, shared stories, and of course, ended the morning the best way we know how — gathered around a table, enjoying a delicious brunch together.
It’s often said that community isn’t just about the things we do together — it’s about who we are together, come what may.
Rain or shine, what stood out most wasn’t the programme we had or didn’t have — but the spirit of togetherness that filled the room. Our volunteers adapted with grace and warmth. Our seniors came ready to make the most of whatever the day would bring.
Mandai Boardwalk can wait. Community can’t. And on that rainy morning, we were reminded again — sometimes the best walks aren’t measured in steps, but in hearts coming together.
