On December 17, 2024, more than 50 seniors from NRCS took a bold step forward—transitioning from participants to volunteers—as they brought joy and celebration to the residents of St John’s Home for the Elderly. This special initiative had two key goals: to engage our seniors through meaningful volunteering and to spread Christmas cheer to the residents of the home.
Joining us for the event were our valued partners: ECF Holy Word, Joo Seng Residences' Network, and Sennett Estate Residences' Network. Together, we created an afternoon filled with warmth and connection. The visit featured a sumptuous high tea served by all participating volunteers, a lively game of bingo, and a variety of performances that brought smiles and laughter to everyone present.
The ukulele group strummed cheerful tunes, setting the tone for the festivities. This was followed by the Singing Interest Group, whose harmonious melodies filled the room. Adding to the energy, a lively line-dancing performance got some toes tapping, and the day was capped off with a special song and dance number by Do Re Mi, our long-time performance volunteers. Their vibrant energy and heartfelt effort made the day even more memorable.
Beyond the joy of the celebration, the event showcased the transformative power of volunteerism. NRCS seniors not only gave their time but pooled their resources to donate essential items such as Milo and biscuits to the home. Each resident also received a handmade beaded keychain, lovingly crafted by an NRCS member—a small gesture that spoke volumes about the love and care behind the effort.
St John’s Home holds a special place in our hearts, as it resides within our neighborhood. This proximity fosters a deeper connection, and many residents recognized our members from previous visits. For our members, the event was a chance to reflect on how meaningful it is to give back. One shared, “It’s a blessing to still be able to bring joy to others through performances.”
This day was a beautiful example of how volunteering enriches not only the lives of those served but also the volunteers themselves. It highlighted the essence of what we hope for our members—to live out their best lives in their silver years by pouring their time, talent, and treasure into their communities.
We are immensely proud of their dedication and the tremendous effort they put into making this day special. For the residents of St John’s, we hope this day reminded them that they are not forgotten, but cherished as our neighbors, loved and valued by their community.
This event is not the first of its kind, nor will it be the last. We look forward to continuing our partnership with St John’s Home and fostering a culture of giving in our community.
